Meaning

I bow to the Sun, the maker of the day: red like the japa flower, a descendant of Sage Kashyapa, shining with great radiance, the enemy of darkness and the one who removes every sin.

I bow to the Moon, Soma: cool and white like curd, a conch and frost, who rose from the ocean of milk and adorns the crown of Lord Shiva.

I bow to Mars, Mangala: born from the womb of the Earth, glowing like lightning, ever youthful, with a spear in his hand.

I bow to Mercury, Budha: dark like the bud of the priyangu plant, of unmatched beauty, gentle, and rich in gentle qualities.

I bow to Brihaspati, the teacher of the gods and the sages, golden in colour, wisdom itself, and lord of the three worlds.

I bow to Venus, Shukra the son of Bhrigu: white like snow, the kunda jasmine and the lotus fibre, the supreme teacher of the Daityas and the one who teaches all the shastras.

I bow to Saturn, the slow-moving one: dark like black collyrium, son of the Sun, elder brother of Yama, born of Chhaya and Martanda the Sun.

I bow to Rahu, who has half a body and great strength, who can overpower the Moon and the Sun, born from the womb of Simhika.

I bow to Ketu, red like the palasha flower, the head among the stars and planets, fierce, stern by nature and fearsome in form.

This verse says that anyone who recites this hymn, sung from the mouth of Vyasa, with a steady mind, by day or by night, will find obstacles calmed.

It says the hymn destroys bad dreams for men, women and kings, and brings unmatched prosperity, good health and growth in wellbeing.

It says that troubles linked to the planets and stars, and those from thieves and fire, all subside. Vyasa declares this without doubt.
